Find out why the Rivers government fired 1700 Versity Staff and demanded the return of appointment letters and ID cards
The Rivers State Government has stated that anomalies in the hiring procedure led to the dismissal of the more than 1700 employees it had hired to serve at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni.
During the final term of Chief Nyesom Wike‘s governorship, the state government hired academic and non-academic workers to serve at the institution.
However, the state government declared the annulment of the employment drive it had done at the institution two months after Sir Siminialaye Fubara took office.
The State Government had instructed everyone hired through the exercise who had been engaged for more than six months to promptly return the employment letter and Staff Identity Cards that were given to them by the institution.
This information was provided in a public announcement dated July 13 and signed by Prof. Prince Chinedu Mmom, the commissioner for education.
Mom declared the employment exercise invalid because it contained numerous anomalies and did not adhere to the government’s standards.
He stated that all those engaged through the process stand unemployed, adding that a credible employment exercise would be carried out He said:
“The Government of Rivers State has observed with dismay the inconsistencies/ irregularities and flagrant disobedience to the directives concerning the just concluded recruitment exercise at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt.
“Therefore, the recent employment exercise conducted by the management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt is hereby cancelled.“All appointment letters issued and received are hereby nullified and the affected persons are directed to return the letters to the office of the Registrar of the Institution and other employment-related properties such as ID Cards in their possession to the office of the Head of Service, Rivers State immediately.
“A proper and credible recruitment exercise shall be conducted in due course.”
