New Census Date Announced by the Federal Government (See New Date)

The population and housing census for 2023 has been moved by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration from March 29 to May 2023.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, when he briefed State House reporters following the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday in Abuja, which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INECdecision )’s to postpone the governor and state assembly elections from March 11 to March 18 prompted the decision to move the census, the minister claims.

He also revealed that N2.8 billion had been authorised by the council for the National Population Commission (NPC) to purchase some software for the census.

“There was a memo presented by the National Population Commission, seeking some software to allow them to conduct the census in May this year. I believe because of the rescheduling of the elections, they cannot commence the census as scheduled.

“They sought council’s approval for a contract to procure software for the census at the sum of N2.8 billion,” he said.
