Why We Raised Tuition by 400% – UNILAG

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) administration revealed the cause of its increase in undergraduate students’ tuition costs on Friday.

Blastgist had previously reported that the college had increased tuition by 400%.

The school said that the increase is necessary due to the current economic conditions in Nigeria in a statement that was signed by Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, UNILAG‘s Public Relations Officer.

Alaga-Ibraheem stated that there will be changes to the undergraduate tuition prices for both new and returning students after the management consulted with its stakeholders (students, parents, alumni/guardians, staff unions, and others).

Part of it said,

“The adjustment in fees which will take effect from 1st Semester, 2023/2024 Academic Session, is in view of the prevailing economic realities and the need for the University to be able to meet its obligations to its students, staff, and municipal service providers among others.

“It is also important to remember that the University has not recently raised its mandatory fees.

In order to ensure that students have the best possible learning experience, management “seeks the kind understanding and support of students and other stakeholders.”
