The nine-time African winners finished second to co-hosts Australia after an undefeated group round.
However, the Three Lionesses of England defeated the West Africans 4-2 on penalties in the Round of 16 to send them home.
The Super Falcons are ranked higher than powerhouses Brazil and Germany, according to FIFA.
The highest ranking African team in the competition is Randy Waldrum’s group.
Spain won the Women’s World Cup for the first time by defeating England 1-0 in the championship game.
Spain, which took first place, is followed in the top 10 rankings by England, Sweden, Australia, Japan, France, the Netherlands, Colombia, the United States, and Nigeria.
