A candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the Senate presidency, Godswill Akpabio, has been elected as President of the Senate.
Godswill Akpabio is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who has served in various political positions, including governor of Akwa Ibom State, minister for Niger Delta Affairs, and now elected the Senate President.
Akpabio, the senate president elect, has been accused of corruption on several occasions, but he has denied any wrongdoing.
In 2017, he was indicted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly misappropriating N10.9 billion in public funds while he was governor of Akwa Ibom State.
The EFCC alleged that Akpabio diverted the funds to his personal use and to fund the activities of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Akpabio has denied any wrongdoing.
In 2020, the Senate and the House of Representatives resolved to investigate allegations of financial recklessness by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which was headed by Akpabio for three years.
The investigations revealed that the NDDC had awarded contracts worth over N80 billion without due process. Akpabio has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the NDDC.
In 2022, the EFCC filed a fresh corruption charge against Akpabio, alleging that he diverted N1.3 billion in public funds to his personal use. Akpabio has denied any wrongdoing in relation to this charge.
