Supreme Court suspends February 10 deadline for use of old naira notes
A restraining order granted by the Supreme Court of Nigeria prevents the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from moving forward with its plan to discontinue accepting the old N200, N500, and N1000 notes as lawful tender.
This suggests that antique Nigerian naria notes are still functional.
On February 3rd, three Northern States—Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara—filed a motion ex-parte, in response to which the decision was rendered.
The Supreme Court’s seven-member panel, which was chaired by Justice John Okoro, unanimously decided to award an interim injunction, stopping the Federal Government, the CBN, commercial banks, and other parties from carrying out the deadline of February 10 for getting rid of the old notes.
In a notice on notice, the court further mandated that the issue be resolved further on February 15.
As a result of this decision, Nigeria may continue to accept the old Naira notes as lawful tender.
